Sleepless

How can you sleep when your heart is aching? When you’re mourning a loss that hasn’t materialized? The seams are splitting slowly but surely and we’re both the type to pick and pull the loose threads until we’ve come undone. How can you sleep when you feel like you’re breaking? When your chest feels like it’s caving? When you can’t breathe because the weight of the world is crashing down on us, and we don’t know if we can muster up the strength to hold each other up. How can you sleep when your eyes won’t cry? When you feel the pressure of held back tears? The thought of losing you is my biggest fear, and falling asleep brings nightmares I don’t have the courage to face.
